Poush 27: A Prithvi Jayanti Day

The 288 Prithvi Jayanti Day is being celebrated to honour the late King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal on Monday.

The day which was earlier also celebrated as national unity day on January 11 (Poush 27th ) each year with much fanfare is mired in doubt since the country was declared a republican state following the collapse of the monarchy.

The government of Nepal earlier used to declare a national holiday on the day of Prithvi Jayanti. Many formal and informal programmes used to be organised by various organisations. But in recent years the public holiday to celebrate the birthday of PN Shah and national unity day has been struck off the Nepalese calendar. There is great confusion among the people whether to celebrate the day or not.
But those who believe in the occasion still celebrate the day in front of the western gate of Singha Durbar by giving homage to the late king Prithvi Narayan Shah with garlands on his statue.

The government led by Girija Prasad Koirala struck off the national holiday for the celebration of the occasion.
