Nepal has been elected as a member of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), a central drug policy-making body within the United Nations system.
Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) is also one of the functional commissions of the United Nation’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Its major function is to assist the council in supervising the application of international drug control treaties.
Permanent Mission of Nepal to UN in New York, disseminating the information said that Nepal was elected from the Asia-Pacific region for the term 2020-2023.
The election was held at the United Nations Headquarters earlier today. This is the first time Nepal is elected a member of the CND.
A total of 33 countries including Nepal from different regions were elected today.
Nepal had received 44 votes of the 54 members of the ECOSOC. Apart from Nepal, Bahrain, China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Thailand and Turkmenistan were also elected to the Commission representing the Asia-Pacific region.
Nepal signed the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs in 2003 and ratified it in 2011.
The Convention has currently 186 states parties. The Convention has currently 186 states parties.
The press release states, “This is yet another opportunity for Nepal to work closely with international community to fight against illicit narcotic drugs.”
It further said, “Nepal attaches high importance to combating drug trafficking and related crimes.”
Nepal is also an elected member of executive board of United Nation’s Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and also an elected member of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development and was a chair of the Committee on Conferences in 2018.
Nepal has been contributing to the cause of UN since it joined the organization in 1955.
