Add Doctors To Treat COVID-19 By Providing Temporary License: NMA

Nepal Medical Association has recommended the Nepal Medical Council to increase the number of doctors by providing temporary license to those who haven’t passed the license exam that the Council conducts.
The recommendation has come at a time when many health workers have suffered from COVID-19 and are receiving treatment themselves. Until last week, 221 health workers, including 51 doctors, had suffered from COVID-19 across Nepal.
Issuing a letter to the Nepal Medical Council on Thursday, also forwarded to the Ministry of Health and Population and Medical Education Commission, the NMA cited that addition of doctors with temporary license to treat COVID-19 related cases would ease the fight against the pandemic.
“While many doctors have been infected with the virus, a lot of them are at high risk. Several doctors have to stay isolated and in quarantine lest they come in contact with a COVID-19 patient. We must add health workers before we face their shortage,” said Dr. Badri Rijal, general secretary at NMA.
As per the association, Nepal Medical Council can provide temporary license to the doctors who have completed their MBBS or MD but have not passed the council’s license examination yet.
Alongside addition of doctors, the association has also urged the council to provide certificate of fellowship to health workers helping to improve the health sector of the country during the global pandemic.
“We need more health workers and the authorities need to appreciate their work by providing appropriate services or certificates.
